US Air Force - Structures et unités de l'Air Combat Command en 2010

L'Air Combat Command (ACC) est un commandement majeur (MAJCOM) créé le 1er juin 1992, résultant de la disparition des Tactical Air Command et Strategic Air Command. L'ACC regroupe au total 1750 avions et hélicoptères, 98000 militaires d'active, 63000 gardes nationaux et réservistes, ainsi que 11000 employés civils. Ses unités sont réparties entre quatre Numbered Air Forces sur le continent nord-américain. Son quartier-général est installé sur l'aérodrome de Langley AFB, en Virginie, et son commandant actuel est le général William M. Fraser III.



Organisation générale de l'ACC en Numbered Air Forces.

Les unités de l'Air Combat Command (ACC) sont réparties en quatre Numbered Air Forces et l'US Air Force Warfare Center (USAFWC). La 1st Air Force, qui regroupe les unités de combat de l'Air National Guard (ANG), est responsable de la défense du continent nord-américain et est sous l'autorité de l'US Northern Command, commandement unifié englobant le Contigous United States (CONUS). La 9th Air Force fait partie de l'US Central Command et déploie ses unités en Irak et en Afghanistan, dans le cadre des opérations Iraqi Freedom et Enduring Freedom. La 10th Air Force regroupe les unités de l'Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) intégrées dans l'ACC. Enfin, la 12th Air Force est sous l'autorité de l'US Southern Command, dont la zone de responsabilité couvre l'Amérique Latine et les îles Caraïbes.

United States Air Force Warfare Center.

L'United States Air Force Warfare Center (USAFWC) est un centre chargé de l'entraînement avancé des aviateurs de l'US Air Force aux tactiques de combat aérien et de bombardement. L'USAFWC est créé en 1966, et est présent sur Eglin AFB, en Floride, et Nellis AFB, dans le désert du Nevada. La superficie du Nellis AF Range Complex couvre 32000km² de terrain d'exercice au nord-ouest de Las Vegas, dont 20000km² sont utilisés par le traffic aérien civil. Ce qui en fait la plus grande base aérienne et le plus grand terrain d'exercice des Etats-Unis.

1st Air Force (1AF-AFNORTH) [Air National Guard].

La 1st Air Force, désignée 1AF-AFNORTH, est une des quatre Air Force d'origine pré-2GM, activée le 18 décembre 1940. Elle fait partie de l'ACC depuis le 1er juin 1992. Son QG est implanté sur la base de Tyndall AFB, en Floride, et son commandant actuel est le major-général Garry C. Dean.

La 1AF est intégrée au sein du commandement unifié US Northern Command. Sa mission primaire actuelle est la défense aérienne du territoire continental des Etats-Unis, en incluant Puerto Rico et les îles Vierges, c'est-à-dire le CONUS. Elle reprend les unités de l'Air National Guard (ANG) affectées auparavant au TAC Air Defense Command (1946-1979). Elle est divisé en deux Air Defense Sector et subordonne la Civil Air Patrol.

9th Air Force (9AF-AFCENT) [US Central Command Air Force].

La 9th Air Force, désignée 9AF-AFCENT, est créée le 11 septembre 1941 et activée le 8 avril 1942. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle est affectée aux théatres d'opérations nord-africain et européen. Pendant la Guerre Froide, elle est une des Numbered Air Force affectées au Tactical Air Command (TAC) et est engagée en Corée, au Vietnam et dans la Première Guerre du Golfe 1991.

Son QG est installé sur la base de Shaw AFB, en Caroline du Sud, et son commandant actuel est le major-général William L. Holland. La 9AF-AFCENT regroupe 9 wings d'active, mais également une trentaine d'unité de l'Air National Guard (ANG) et de l'Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). Elle dépend du commandement unifié US Central Command (CENTCOM). Une partie de ses avions, réorganisée en "Air Expeditionary Wings", intervient en Asie, au Moyen-Orient et dans la Corne de l'Afrique, dans le cadre des opérations Iraqi Freedom et Enduring Freedom.

La 10th Air Force, désignée 10AF-AFRC est une Numbered Air Force de l'Air Force Reserve Command affectée à l'Air Combat Command. Son QG est installé sur la base aérienne de NAS JRB Fort Worth, au Texas, et son commandant actuel est le major-général Frank J. Padilla.

12th Air Force (12AF-AFSOUTH) [US Southern Command].

La 12th Air Force est la Numbered Air Force affectée au Commandement Unifié US Southern Command, dont la zone de responsabilité couvre les îles Caraïbes, l'Amérique Centrale et l'Amérique du Sud.

Créée le 20 août 1942 à Bolling Field dans le District de Columbia, elle est déployée en Afrique du Nord, en Méditerannée et dans le sud de la France au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Pendant la Guerre Froide, elle fait partie de l'US Air Force in Europe (USAFE) puis du Tactical Air Command (TAC). Ses unités sont engagées au Vietnam et dans l'opération Desert Storm, au Moyen-Orient. Dans la Guerre Globale contre le Terrorisme, la plupart d'entre-elles effectuent des déploiements par rotation dans les unités expéditionnaires de la 9AF, en Irak et en Afghanistan.
